A few days ago, on February 26th, Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon were introduced in a special Pokémon Direct hosted by Nintendo. Since the presentation, the official website, along with the official Twitter account, have made references to this being a new era of Pokémon. A Generation 7 perhaps?
A good indication of this is posted on the Official Pokémon website, where this text is located;
Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon are coming out for systems in the Nintendo 3DS family in holiday 2016, with a new world, new Pokémon, and new adventures to discover!
The official Press Release adds on to this. A quote by J.C. Smith, the senior director of Consumer Marketing at Pokémon Company International states that
“I can’t wait to see what fans think of the new adventures they’ll find in Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon.”
Should I also note that Pokémon transferred from the Virtual Console versions of Red, Blue, and Yellow can’t be transferred “Straight” to Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire?
What does all of this mean for the generation 6 games, notably X and Y? Kalos was explored in only these games, and while we normal have some sort of follow up game, or even sequels, X and Y don’t seem to be getting that treatment. We’ve barely explored the region of Kalos, and have barely been introduced to the new Pokémon before we’re now being thrust right into a new generation.
And what about the Kalos starters? Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie have been largely overshadowed. Most of the marketing around X and Y involved the Kanto starters, Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Squirtle. That wasn’t made any better with the release of Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, which of course brought the Hoenn starters back for another go.
I feel this is horrible. I am personally a fan of the Kalos trio of starters, and the fact that they were always shoved to the back of the pack really bothers me. They’ve never gotten the same treatment the other trios of starters have gotten, and now they’ll more than likely be replaced entirely.
Pokémon Company, where’s the fair treatment of all Pokemon?
